Kinshasa

Kinshasa ist die Hauptstadt der Demokratischen Republik Kongo. Die Stadt hat 7.787.832 Einwohner (Stand 1. Januar 2005) und ist damit die zweitgrößte Stadt Afrikas.

Geografie

, Kinshasa und der Fluss Kongo

Kinshasa liegt am Pool Malebo am Kongo-Fluss direkt gegenüber von Brazzaville, der Hauptstadt der Republik Kongo.

Geschichte

Kinshasa wurde 1881 von Henry Morton Stanley als Handelsposten gegründet und zu Ehren des damaligen belgischen Königs Leopold II Léopoldville genannt. 1920 wurde die Stadt Hauptstadt von Belgisch-Kongo, der 1960 unabhängigen Demokratischen Republik Kongo.

Nach der Machtergreifung 1965 von Mobutu Sese Seko wurde Léopoldville 1966 umbenannt nach dem Namen eines ehemaligen Dorfes Kinshasa, das in der Nähe lag.

Wirtschaft

Kinshasa ist auch eine Industriestadt, die die Güter aus dem Landesinnern verarbeitet.
