Fearn landete als erster Europäer am 8. November 1798 auf Nauru, als er mit seinem Walfängerschiff Hunter auf der Reise von Neuseeland nach China war. Er nannte sie wegen der damaligen attraktiven Natur und der großen Freundlichkeit der Insulaner Pleasant Island ("freundliche Insel").
