Helena Rubinstein begann ein Studium der Medizin in der Schweiz. 1902 eröffnete sie ihr erstes Geschäft für Schönheitsprodukte in Australien. 1908 kehrte sie nach Europa zurück, wo sie zunächst in England und später in Frankreich wirkte. Mit Beginn des Ersten Weltkrieges flüchtete sie in die Vereinigten Staaten, wo sie eine Firma aufbaute, die heute noch nach ihr benannt ist.
