Columbia (Fluss)

Der 1.953 Kilometer lange Columbia River ist der wasserreichste Fluss in Nordamerika, der in den Pazifischen Ozean fließt.

Seine Quelle befindet sich in British Columbia (Kanada) und er fließt durch den mittleren Osten des US-Bundesstaates Washington. Die letzten 480 Kilometer bilden die Grenze zwischen den Bundesstaaten Washington und Oregon. Bei Astoria fließt der Columbia in den Pazifik. Der Columbia ist der größte Fluss der Region Pazifischer Nordwesten.

Der amerikanische Seefahrer Robert Gray entdeckte am 11. Mai 1792 als erster Weißer den Columbia River. Er reiste mit seinem privaten Schiff Columbia in den pazifischen Nordwesten, um mit Fellen zu handeln.

Die Lewis-und-Clark-Expedition erreichte 1805 vom Osten auf dem Landweg die Mündung des Flusses.

Der einst wilde und an Lachsen reiche Fluss wird heute von Staudämmen zur Stromerzeugung und zur Kontrolle von Überschwemmungenen eingedämmt. Im Osten wird das Wasser auch zur Bewässerung verwendet.
